Listening effectively is one of the key components to great communication. As Wright State University reports, Research has found that by listening effectively, we can avail many benefits:
1. Get more information from the people we manage.
2. Increase others trust and reduce conflict.
3. We will better understand how to motivate others, and inspire a higher level of commitment in the people we manage.
One of the interesting fact is that even if we think we are an effective communicator, chances are that we only listen with 25 percent efficiency.
So let’s just sit back and start listening for a moment before we intervene with our opinion.
Through correct Body Language, let’s show or project the right image, an image that we want to Listen- Listen with the right attitude.
Attributes of An Effective Listener:
An effective Listener looks alert and maintains eye-contact or in simple terms looks interested.
An effective Listener, listens to understand and not to make judgements or jump to conclusions.
An effective Listener, listens Actively- uses encouraging questions and positive body language.
An effective Listener concentrates i.e. focusses on what is said in terms of not just the words but also the gestures and the speaker’s intent.
An effective Listener, looks at the Speaker by maintaining eye contact, looking at the Speaker’s face, eyes, gestures as well as speaker’s body language
An effective Listener, disciplines Emotions i.e. is emotionally intelligent and manages emotions- Avoids being biased towards the speaker because of gender, accent, words etc.
An effective Listener avoids Physical Distractions/ Barriers to the communication
An effective Listener tries their best not to antagonize the speaker by trying to avoid actions or issues which will trigger conflicts or criticism.
Here in lies an important factor, that it is not just the speaker who may be driving the conversation but also the listener who may be steering the real wheel of artful conversation or effective communication.
